Sus primeros años de matrimonio transcurrieron en el París de las vanguardias, donde la pareja formaba parte del círculo más exclusivo de intelectuales y artistas. Todo cambió, sin embargo, a raíz de la decisión de Prokofiev de regresar a la Unión Soviética. Aunque fueron recibidos con los más altos honores, con el tiempo empezaron a sufrir las insidias del régimen estalinista y el deterioro de su relación. Al terminar la Guerra Mundial, Lina fue acusada falsamente y, sin que nadie pudiera hacer nada por salvarla, fue enviada al gulag, donde permaneció hasta la muerte de Stalin.
